Replacing the steering rack with their own hands, step by step, in what cases the steering rail changes

The steering rail is considered a fairly reliable knot, which is very rare, but there are exceptions when this node delivers many inconveniences by car owners. About the problems with the steering control show characteristic knocks, accompanied by unpleasant twitching steering wheels on an uneven road. In this case, it is necessary or replaced by a steering rail, or repair it. At the same time, the first option is more reliable. About this further in the article.

Steering rack - what it is

The design of the rush mechanism is quite simple. The steering rail is part of the mechanism that controls the specified movement of the car and move the wheels. Its work is based on moving the drive gear associated with the steering wheel. As for the principle of operation of the mechanism, it is also simple. When the rack steering wheel is rotated, it moves in a predetermined direction - to the right either to the left, which actuates the thrust of the steering drive - and the wheels are rotated.

Functions of the steering rack

The main function of the steering rack is the transformation of the rotation of the steering wheel into the agreed movement of the wheels.

In addition, the steering mechanism performs such functions:

  • Transfers the force steering wheel.
  • Increases the effort attached to the steering wheel.
  • When removing the load returns the steering wheel to the neutral position.

Steering rakes are electrical, hydraulic and mechanical. In essence, the first two types differ from mechanical only the presence of an amplifier (electric or hydraulic), which makes it easier for motorist car control.

Damage to the steering rack

  • Fault of the inside of the steering rack. Cleaning the gear itself or a gear mechanism.
  • Deformation of the rack hull. This leads to a complete immobilization of the car.
  • Disrupting the integrity of the tips, steering (curvature, crack, and so on) due to mechanical impact (corrosion, damage, blow and so on).
  • Depressurization of the steering rack. After disrupting tightness, the particles of sand and dust penetrate inside, after which the steering rack is completely out of order.
  • Critical wear of internal mechanisms. In this case, riding a car becomes impossible.

In what cases is the replacement of the steering rack

Reiki repair is possible when the inside of the mechanism is not impaired. If during the inspection you found a serious wear of the inner part of the steering rack and its elements, the presence of dirt inside the rake, damage to the anthers, then the output is only one - the replacement replacement. Only so you can solve the problem with this node. Many workshops offer their services to restore and repair steering wheels, but all restoration work, as a rule, is briefly solved by the question.

Replacing the steering rack with their own hands, stepdown

First of all, prepare the tools and materials that will be required during the replacement of the steering rack, as well as perform all preparatory work.

tools, consumables, fixtures

  1. New steering rack.
  2. Embrellator tips.
  3. Wooden backups.
  4. Rag.
  5. Liquid key.
  6. Thin screwdriver.
  7. Hammer.
  8. Heads with a rattling.
  9. Set of wrenches and end keys.

preparatory work

  • Before starting work, install the machine on a flat place and block the parking brake. Under the rear wheels to lay bricks. Fixing the machine, go to the front.
  • Stop the steering wheel to the neutral position.
  • Loosen the wheelchair turns.

After all preparatory work, subdominate one side of the car, remove the wheel and lower the machine by setting the support. Do the same on the other hand. So you will be able to free access to the steering tips, which will simplify the disassembly of the steering rack.

Before unscrewing the steering tips, clean the fastening bolts from the dirt using a metal brush, after which you take a WD solution (the so-called liquid key).

While the fluid corps rust, free access to the rail. Removing will interfere with the signaling siren (if available) and adsorber gases. Gently unscrew the terminals and remove them to the side.

we dismantle tips

If you will change the tips together with the steering rail, when you withdraw old, select them with a hammer or use a special puller.

Using the passage, remove the knap of the fastening nut and unscrew it. Insert a wicked fastening under the rubber seal, and get the top of the finger to the tip bolt. Tighten the puller nut and the hammer blow to the hammer blow from the fastening of the rack tip.

removing the rail

  1. Loosen the attachments of the cross. This connection is located in the cabin under the brake pedal. We remove the rubber rug and raise the trim so that nothing bothered. It is worth noting that the inner fastening is made in the form of a clamp with small slots. To be released, you will need to unscrew only one nut.
  2. Next, go back under the hood and unscrew the fastening nuts of the steering rack clamps.
  3. Now the rail is free and left to remove it. Take for the housing with two hands and, loosening, pull it on yourself. If it is impossible to remove, then the slotted connection is bought. Arm yourself with a hammer and not very much do on it.
  4. When all attachments are disconnected, pull out the rail through the hole in the arched wheel of the wheel. Turn it to the left or right so that the slotted shaft goes into the recess.

The steering rail must be removed very carefully, in order to avoid damage to the fuel hose or electrical wiring. It is advisable to spend all work with the assistant.

installation of the steering rack

  1. Clean all seats with a brush and sandpaper. We process the planting studs with graphite lubricant or solidol.
  2. Before mounting a new rail, open the plugs and fill the holes with lithol.
  3. We bring the rake under the hood. This is done in the sequence, reverse removal. It is necessary to gently turn it around the axis, in order to avoid damage to the mechanisms and wiring.
  4. Put the rack on the studs, throw the clamps and nag nuts.
  5. At the last stage, tighten the nuts of the trunks.
  6. When the rail is set, tip the tips, tighten them and install the wheels.

Tips for the experienced motorist

After replacing the steering rail, make sure to adjust the collapse.
